Is morality dependent on religion in any sense?
Is morality dependent on religion in any sense?Throughout the ages of humanity many people has come to believe that one cannot be moral without religion. I however believe that is possible to be moral and ethical without religion because there are societies of Atheists that are moral , and there were communists countries that had no religion whose people were perfectly moral and ethical. To prove my proposal that morality is independent of religion I will be discussing my essay under the following points: Socrates asked: “ do the gods love holiness and morality because they are holy?, or is it morality holy because the gods love it?”.(Helm,1981) Put this in simpler terms: if an existing God says something is good because he sees that it is good objectively, then the goodness of that something is intrinsic in the thing; the good is not dependent on the God. It is simply in other words, if the God recognises dishonesty is wrong, then the wrongful act of lying is wrong even if the God does not see that. Morality or immorality in any action is not dependent on God or religion; God’s will is determined by what he sees and not the revers
Before going any further I would like to state that I believe that with this saying in mind of Rousseau it is quite clear to realise that morality is something that speaks through your heart, something that you just know- it is something we might call instinct or intuition. With the ability to be a rational being and using your instinct or intuition a person can make a valued distinction between right and wrong. When linking up this belief with the social contract it is clear to see why it works so well. When I say that it can be linked I mean that due to the socialisation of people by means of social interaction a common standard can be created.(Rousseau,1984)
