She wants to block out the negativity of the death of Hamlet. She also shows no signs of sorrow to please Claudius. She uses her charm and grace to make him happy. The role that she plays implies that she uses men to get what she desires. In order for her to use them, she has to make them happy, then they will fall into her innocence.

In the play Hamlet, another suspicion is raised about the role of Gertrude. When Old Hamlet dies, she doesn’t seem angry about it. It shows no signs of sadness at all throughout the play. This creates many ideas of suspicion about Gertrude. One of the ideas is that perhaps, Old Hamlet and Gertrude did not have a happy marriage. This may further the idea of the affair between Gertrude and Claudius. Perhaps, Claudius was aware of the unhappy marriage and felt that he was doing Gertrude a favor by murdering him as well as being able to become king.

Almost as bad, good mother, As kill a king and marry with his brother.” (Hamlet) This quote disregards Gertrude’s innocence. It causes conflict with what her husband thinks of her.
