Analysis Of The Character Gertrude. In the Play Hamlet

In many works of literature, the authors entertain the readers by allowing them to ponder certain things about the characters. One of the many works of literature that embrace this type of entertainment is Hamlet by William Shakespeare. In this play, the roles of many characters can be contemplated. One particular character that plays this type of role is Gertrude, the Queen of Denmark. She plays a role that leads to many suspicions about the death of Old Hamlet, the King of Denmark.

Gertrude’s role raises many questions about the king’s death. One of the suspicions that may have been contemplated was the idea that Gertrude may have been involved with Claudius before the death of her husband. “Ay, that incestuous, that adulterate beast, with witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts, - O wicked wit and gifts, that have the power so to seduce- won to his shameful lust, the will of my most seeming- virtuous queen.” (Ghost, I: V) In this quote, it is implied that Claudius seduced her before the king died.

According to a critical analysis on Hamlet, Claudius manipulated Gertrude. Her love for the king was corrupted before he died. Gertrude was the type of character who needed affection. Claudius gave her what she des

Based on a critical analysis on Hamlet, Gertrude shows no sign of sadness or anger for a reason. She is mainly concerned about her happiness. She wants to block out the negativity of the death of Hamlet. She also shows no signs of sorrow to please Claudius. She uses her charm and grace to make him happy. The role that she plays implies that she uses men to get what she desires. In order for her to use them, she has to make them happy, then they will fall into her innocence.

In the play Hamlet, another suspicion is raised about the role of Gertrude. When Old Hamlet dies, she doesn’t seem angry about it. It shows no signs of sadness at all throughout the play. This creates many ideas of suspicion about Gertrude. One of the ideas is that perhaps, Old Hamlet and Gertrude did not have a happy marriage. This may further the idea of the affair between Gertrude and Claudius. Perhaps, Claudius was aware of the unhappy marriage and felt that he was doing Gertrude a favor by murdering him as well as being able to become king.

In the play Hamlet, there are quote in the book that may raise suspicion about Gertrude’s knowledge on the death of Hamlet. “What have I done, that thou dearest wag thy tongue, In noise so rude against me?” (Queen) This quote implies that she is completely innocent. It also implies that has no knowledge of the death of her husband. However, Hamlet thinks that his mother may have been involved or has knowledge of her husband’s death. “A bloody deed! Almost as bad, good mother, As kill a king and marry with his brother.” (Hamlet) This quote disregards Gertrude’s innocence. It causes conflict with what her husband thinks of her.

The idea that Gertrude showed no sorrow for her husband’s death was implied in the play. “Do not forever with thy vailed lids seek for thy noble father in the dust: Thou know’st
