Analysis of the Drama “Oedipus Rex”
The drama Oedipus Rex starts off with the plague, which is happening in the city of Thebes. As Thebes’s King, Oedipus has to solve this plague. However, by soling this plague, Oedipus finds his origin and his background of where he came from. And here it comes the plot of the dramatic conflicts of the drama. Oedipus was the only child of Laios and Iocaste, king and queen of Thebes. They took Oedipus to the oracle at Delphi to have his prophecy read. The oracle prophesized that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. In order to prevent this from happening, Laios and Iocaste pierced Oedipus's foot and ordered a shepherd to abandon him on a mountainside. The shepherd pitied the child and gave him to a herdsman from Corinth. The herdsman then gave the child to Polybus and Merope, the childless king and queen of Corinth. They adopted him and raised him as their own. Oedipus grew up thinking he was the prince of Corinth. He heard rumors that he was not the natural son of Polybus and Merope, so he went to consult the oracle of Delphi to find the truth. The oracle repeated the same prophecy that was told to Laios and Iocaste. Thinking that Polybus and Merope were his parents, Oedipus left Corinth to avoid his fore
told fate. He went to Thebes. On his way to Thebes, Oedipus met an old man accompanied by several servants at the three crossroads. The old man was Laios, who was Oedipus’s father, on his way to Delphi. Since both men were proud, they refused to step aside so the other could pass. Laios attacked Oedipus. As a result, Oedipus killed them all, excepted on of the servant. At the end, Oedipus blinds himself by gouged his eyes with Iocaste’s broach. He says that Apollo, god of the sun, brought him sick, sick fate upon him but the blinding hand was his own. He chooses to blind himself so that he does not have to see his shame, and by doing this, he accepts his own punishment. Since He cannot do anything to change his fate, he accepts his fate and deal with it. On the other hand, Iocaste chooses death to end her problem. This is a negative way to face the issue of life. One cannot choose avoidance when facing difficulties. The death of Iocaste makes Oedipus a hero because it shows that he accepts his fate and be punished with it. Oedipus accepts his responsibility for his fate and reconciles with the fact that his fate was divinely ordained. The mood of the drama is sympathetic toward its characters and conflicts. Conflicts and confusions are what make audiences interesting to read on and eager to find out the resolution at the end. The raising action of the search for the murderer is full of details and struggles that are beautifully described in the drama. This is a tragic drama with lots of dramatic irony, which allows the audience or the other characters to know more than the protagonists do about their own circumstances. For instance, Oedipus seeks the murderer of Laios but in his case he is seeking himself as the murderer. Teiresias, the blind seer knows the fact that Oedipus is the murderer of King Laios and tries to convince Oedipus should not bother to ask. The oracle at Delphi says that Oedipus would kill his f
