In the 1950’s, a new market surfaced with the baby boom and the rise of community supermarkets. H.J. Heinz III was also coming into his own. He grew into a very big people peson. After school, he went to work at the Pickle Works like his father. He later left and joined the Air Force then returned and worked for the H.J. Heinz Company. He then married in 1966 to his wife Theresa and they had a son, which hey named H.J. Heinz IV. He then later left the company to pursue teaching business at Carnegie Mellon University. He also became involved in the field of politics and was attempting to get his own career started. In 1971, he was elected to the U.S. Congress. He was reelected twice as a republican because he had so much support from the democratic population. In 1977, he ran for a senate seat. He ran into a very close race in Philadelphia but in Pittsburgh the race wasn’t even close and he was elected to senator. In 1979, he was elected to campaign chairman.

Pittsburgh was coming into the age of steel when it became known as the “Smoky City”. This was also about the time when World War II was coming into swing. The H.J. Heinz Company was again involved in the war effort. They became so involved that they converted some of their canning factories so that they could design and manufacture gliders for the U.S. Military. Heinz was also very beneficial in the renaissance of Pittsburgh after the war.
