Heinz
Through the years there have been many different families who have contributed to the health and prosperity of the region of Pittsburgh. One of these influential families was the Heinz family. The H.J. Heinz Company was founded more than a century ago, back when Pittsburgh was referred to as the “Gateway to the West”. In 1845, a fire burned through most of Pittsburgh. Shortly afterwards, H.J. Heinz started a small business called “The Heinz and Noble Company” shortly after this devastating point in Pittsburgh’s history. His company sold pickles and relish. Shortly thereafter, the economy fell on bad times and his company fell into bankruptcy. But that didn’t stop H.J. Heinz, he was intent on getting out of bankruptcy and paying back all of his debts. Eventually, Heinz got out of bankruptcy and started up his company again and built a new factory. He decided that he wanted his company to function like that of a family. His employees even had weekly manicures. This made him very successful and people enjoyed working for him and his company. In the 1950’s, a new market surfaced with the baby boom and the rise of community supermarkets. H.J. Heinz III was also coming into his own. He grew into a very big people peson. After school, he went to work at the Pickle Works like his father. He later left and joined the Air Force then returned and worked for the H.J. Heinz Company. He then married in 1966 to his wife Theresa and they had a son, which hey named H.J. Heinz IV. He then later left the company to pursue teaching business at Carnegie Mellon University. He also became involved in the field of politics and was attempting to get his own career started. In 1971, he was elected to the U.S. Congress. He was reelected twice as a republican because he had so much support from the democratic population. In 1977, he ran for a senate seat. He ran into a very close race in Philadelphia but in Pittsburgh the race wasn’t even close and he was elected to senator. In 1979, he was elected to campaign chairman. Pittsburgh was coming into the age of steel when it became known as the “Smoky City”. This was also about the time when World War II was coming into swing. The H.J. Heinz Company was again involved in the war effort. They became so involved that they converted some of their canning factories so that they could design and manufacture gliders for the U.S. Military.
