City Life vs. Small Town

Many believe that song lyrics may promote youth violence due to the profound impact the music industry has on today’s children. Proof of just how influential these musicians are is blatantly obvious by just looking at the children dressing and mimicking the actions of these idols. There have been numerous stories flooding the news about teenagers committing suicide or hate crimes due to certain song lyrics among the rap and rock genres.

Many rappers do not serve as good role models for the children that listen to their music. For example, Tupac Shakur, who was sentenced to jail for 30 days for the failed attempt of hitting a man with a baseball bat during a concert, or Ice Cube, who killed a man at a bowling alley, these two men are very popular among the rap community and countless children look up to them as idols. Are these the type of men who you would want your children looking up to? Rappers such as these write songs focusing on the murdering of policemen and the raping of women for fun, and many children can sing-a-long with these hateful lyrics without fully comprehending the intensity of the situation.

Bands like Insane Clown Posse encourage kids to take drugs, drink alcohol, kill people, and have pre-marital sex.

It is not only the rock community that is home to dozens of musicians writing and recording songs with explicit lyrics such as Manson’s, many in the rap community contribute to violence in the media as well. For example, popular rap artist Cypress Hill sang, “I put my glock to your dome and you start to cry, bye. Boom biddy bye, any last prayers before you die?” Eminem is another controversial artist, always trying to surpass last year’s album with an even more gruesome arrangement of hate words. One of Eminem’s most overplayed and loved songs was “Kill you” devoted to his then ex-wife Kimberly, in it he says, “Slut, you think I won’t choke no whore ‘til the vocal cords don’t work in her throat no more? Texas Chainsaw left his brains all danglin’ from his neck, while his head barely hangs on. Blood, guts, guns on cuts, knives, lives, wives, nuns, sluts.” Rappers such as Eminem are constantly in the media, whether through the over playing of their songs on popular radio stations such as Z100 or KTU, or even through parents complaining about the lyrics. Even “negative” publicity such as this help propel musicians and their record sales upward.

To conclude, music definitely has an affect on teenager’s behavior, and usually without them having knowledge of t
