Silkwood - Apathy or Activism
There are not a whole lot of pure citizens, whether they are good or bad, in this world. Most have both positive and negative qualities, and the potential to become a better or worse citizen within their lifetime. Karen Silkwood, Drew Stephens, and Winston, “the picture man,” are three characters from the film Silkwood, who show varying levels of citizenship, which is loosely defined as bettering ones country or community through personal actions, throughout the movie. Karen Silkwood, a model of the southern American, blue collar, confederate, activist, is a nuclear power plant worker with a mission. During the last chapter of her life she is in a battle with the company for which she works. Whether it be making fun of other people, quitting his job due to a lack of commitment to solving its problems, or intentionally hurting Karen with his harsh words and lack of support for her activism. Drew eventually turns his horrible display of citizenship into an acceptable form when he realizes how deeply the power plant has hurt his girlfriend, Karen, after he walks through their house which had been completely emptied, due to Karen’s contamination. After this point of the movie, Drew decides to fight back a little bit against the company. This is shown when he punches a company-supporting employee named Winston in the face. This is a display of Drew’s opposition to the p
