Even after having the movie described to me, it couldn't have prepared me for actually seeing this movie. What occurred in this movie is horrific and sad. It is also scary because it went on for so long. Within this film there were many sociological concepts, such as racism, sexism, supremacy and others. All of these terms have a great impact on a person watching this film.
Many gender issues arise in this movie, and many of them are tied in with other sociological concepts such as race. There are a few purely gendered issues that arise in this film. One such issue is when the children arrive at the Moore River Native Settlement to learn how to become civilized. The only thing that the girls are seen fit for is work as maids or other similar typical women jobs. There is never any effort to teach the girls how to become something more in life then just a maid. This is probably because they are black girls, and because they are inferior there is nothing else they are really fit to do in society except clean up after those who are s
Another gender issue seemed to arise when the main characters witnessed a girl who had tried and run away be returned. She was then punished, whipped, put in solitary confinement, and her hair was cut off. I'm not sure if hair has any meaning to the Aboriginal people, but the idea of cutting of the girl’s hair does seem to be trying to make her feel sub-human and sub-woman. By cutting off her hair, she loses all respect and is made to feel like she is lower then all the other girls because she now has short hair, and civilized women do not try and look like men. If she looks like a man then there is something terribly wrong with her.
There are many other sociological issues in this movie. Too many to talk about in one paper in fact. It seems that race and gender issues are abundant throughout the world. The sad thing is nothing is really ever done about them until after the fact. Either that or it takes a very long time for things to change in the world. And some things don't seem like they will ever change at all. The impor
