On February 12, 1809, the son of Thomas and Nancy Honks Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Harden County, Kentucky. They named him Abraham after his grandfather. Having no education, Thomas Lincoln, Abraham’s father worked as a farmer, as his family made repeated new starts in the west. When little Abraham was eight years old, his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana, where he grew up in a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. Abraham’s childhood was spent in a poor life, as opportunities for education and cultural activities on the frontier wes poor. In the year of 1818, his mother Nancy died of a frontier decease called “Milk Sickness.” Only one year after Nancy’s death, Abraham’s father, Thomas, married a woman named Sarah bush Johnston, a mother of three children, who became Abraham’s stepmothe. Sarah made sure that the by Abraham received

at least some schooling to “read and write.”

Four years after the marriage, Lincoln was elected to the United States congress, serving only one less than successful term in the Houses of representatives until 1849. In the Election of 1860, friends began to urge Lincoln to run for president. He held back, but he did extend his range of speech making beyond Illinois. On February 27, 1860, at Cooper Union, in New York, Abraham delivered and address on the need for restricting slavery that put him in the forefront of Republican Leadership. On February 11, 1861, Lincoln left Springfield to take up his duties as President. Therefore, he became the sixteenth president of United States.

In the year of 1830, the Lincolns decided to leave the state of Indiana, because they hoped of a better future and moved to the state of Illinois. Abraham settled in the town of New Salem, Illinois, where he began his education by studying English grammar, mathematics, and literature. Abraham Lincoln’s desire to learn and his honesty impressed the people that soon he come to social and political reputation. He did several jobs to support himself; ferryman, rail-splitter, store clerk and store-owner
