History of Christianity in Australia

Christianity first came to Australia in 1788 with the Reverend Richard Johnson, a Church of England (Anglican) minister, who sailed with the First Fleet. Christianity has been giving itself a bad name in the media due to the disturbing criminal actions committed by some members of the church. This includes child abuse, rape and pedophilia committed by priests in the mid 1900’s, which has caused a lot of disturbance and anger and lost of faith among fellow Christian followers. For instance, the resignation of the Australian governor-general, Dr Peter Hollingworth, the former Anglican archbishop of Brisbane in the state of Queensland, who was alleged of rape and child pedophilia which he clearly denies. There have been many cases such as this, which has caused grief and sadness from members that have experienced such inhumane actions committed by some members of the Church and frustration in society. As a result this would lead to the decline of Christianity as followers may lose faith in the Church because of the dishonesty.

nd settlers of several religions and many denominations of Christianity, financed the first church building completed in 1793 and established the colony's first school near Circular Quay. Since then Christianity spread to different parts in Australia and became the dominant religion.
