Affirmative Action is a term used very vaguely nowadays. There are three different meanings to the term Affirmative action. The first meaning refers to the term Affirmative recruitment. Affirmative recruitment is used when an employer or school strongly encourages minorities to apply themselves to a job or college/university. Another meaning refers to the term Affirmative fairness. This term is used when an employer or college administrator takes extreme precautions to make sure all are treated fairly.
The third and last term used to describe Affirmative Action is Affirmative preference. This term is referred to when someone with the “right” sex or race is preferred for a job/school opportunity over someone who is the “wrong” sex or race. Though the main argument for Affirmative Action was to create equal opportunity for people in the workforce and for students seeking admission into higher education, it made possible the hiring of unqualified workers, and reverse discrimination, that result in unfair standards in the workforce.
Affirmative recruitment, “when a school or employer aggressively encourages minorities or women to apply for a job or a place in the entering class” (McWhirter 4), often results wi

th unqualified employees who are unable to execute their jobs effectively. Many times, employers were forced to find the best minority rather than the person most qualified for the job. “There are some good black people out there. Have one of them aboard by a month from next Thursday or at least show that you’ve tried” (Bergmann 85). This is a way that business people were pressed to find minorities. They only had a short time period and many minorities were not skilled for the job the employer was looking to fill. An example of Affirmative recruitment would be a policy adopted by Duke University in 1993. This policy required each department to hire at least one new African-American for a faculty position. Various surveys and estimates show that less than 4,000 blacks receive Ph.D.’s in the United States. Therefore, Duke University’s policy would force them to hire faculty that are not as qualified as their white counterparts. “A college would send students and professors into an inner-city neighborhood to help high school students understand what college is all about and gain the confidence needed to apply. An employer might advertise job openings in newspapers that have large minority readership” (McWhirter 5).
Affirmative fairness is extremely similar to Affirmative recruitment. Many Americans seem to prefer these two terms to the third. Affirmative fairness means going out of the way to make sure a woman or minority candidate for a college’s entering class, a job, or a promotion has been treated fairly (McWhirter 5). “When, if ever, is it ethically right to pass over the person judged “most qualified” and to take instead a person judged to be less qualified who will add diversity?"(Bergmann 108) It is never right to pass over the person with more experience for the job because a business needs to fill its quota but this is what Affirmative Action caused many business owners to do. Affirmative fairness can also be used to describe the Duke University example previously mentioned. “In the college context, fair treatment may mean looking at the particular background of a student to ascertain if it is fair to apply the usual admission requirements in his or her particular case” (McWhirter 5). This is certainly not fair. I am not saying treating minorities different is fair but I believe that everyone should work for what they want to achieve. If you do not have good enough grades, you fail and cannot go to the next grade level. Teachers do not look over your background and change things because of your history.
