Motivating workers to succeed
The foundation of all accomplishments throughout the history of mankind is the motivation of the person or group of people working for the goal. Motivation is defined as a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior. If someone is motivated to get something done, the chances are the task will be completed. This ranges from a child getting good grades on their report card to an employee fulfilling their duties. Certain things are needed for motivation to work in its intended way. The person will have to feel the need to do what has to be done and have some sort of compensation for the effort. People can be motivated by their own personal reasons or by their superiors. People need to be motivated to get work done around the office. People are fairly simple beings. They go through life with basic needs and wants. If they need or want something, they will do what they can to get it. This brings up the drive-reduction theory. A man might feel the need to provide everything his family could ever want. In the work place, the boss is the biggest player in the game. He is the leader and his main job is to keep workers motivated. This can be extremely hard because no one is exactly alike in how they need to be motivated. The leaders have to attend to people’s motives to get the maximum level of potential. If someone values accomplishment then a good manager would attend to that by motivating the person to try new things and strive for excellence. They could plant a seed in a persons head that they are only as good as they want to be, and the worker will go out and try their hardest to be the best they can be. Others want recognition for their efforts from others. These workers should be commended for their hard work and fulfill their desire for being appreciated. Some value affiliation and work harder in teams. These people should be placed in a group that shares decision-making abilities and they will work hard to do their part. Power is a big value amongst people today. They feel a need to be the best worker in the workplace. A good manager would put these people into a competition type environment, where they can feel superior to others. All of these values have things in common. A manager has to set clear and specific goals in order to give the workers an idea of what needs to be done. These goals will bring attention to what needs to be done and gives the workers a sense of urgency to get the job accomplished. Progress reports give workers an idea of how they are doing on the job. If an employee gets a progress report and they are doing poorly, they will be more motivated to work harder to reach the goal. This is known as task leadership. Another effective form of leadership is social leadership. This is when a boss mediates conflicts and builds up a team spirit in the group to create high performance. In a study preformed by Mayo Hawthorne, a group of six women could produce 2,400 units in one 48-hour week with no rest pauses. When given two five-minute breaks a day, the output went up. The breaks were then increased to ten-minutes and the women were given a free meal during the first break and the productivity went up again. These events in the experiment brought
