Aging in the World Today

The aging population in the world today is growing quicker than in any other time in the world’s history due to the “baby boomer generation.” This generation is starting to age and will have a major impact on the retired and aging population in the next few years. The following graph found on the Administration on Aging website, depicts the growth of persons age 65 and over evidence this since 1900. This shows that the aging population over the age of 65 will be the largest percent of the population in the near future.

The amount of people in the 35 to 44 year old age group through the 45 to 54 year old age group are the largest group of population and the people in these age groups will become our elderly in the future years. The current median age of persons living in the United States is 35.3 years of age.

This is also depicted by the composite of the United States population using the following to show the percentage of persons living in the United States from the census for the 2001 year.

Age less than 5 years 19,175,798, which is 6.8%

5 to 9 years 20,549,505 which is 7.3% 10 to 14 years 20,528,072 which is 7.3%

15 to 17 years 12,040,437 which is 4.3 %


There are 42 super centenarians living in the world according to the Gerontology Research Group, these are persons that are at least 110 years old or older. Among the 42 are 14 persons living in the United States and the oldest of these is Mary Christian, a 113-year-old female living in California. She was born June 12, 1889 in Massachusetts. John McMorran was born 7 days after Mary in the same month and year. Mr. McMorran lives in Florida and was born in Michigan on June 19, 1889.
