The article written by Rivoli discusses abusive and exploitative work practices. Due to the lack of control between management and subcontractors in manufacturing facilities, there is a substantial amount of abuse and manipulation that exists. Also, there is a lack of restrictions and controls that help to deter the exploitation that exists.
Some of the major problems that occur in manufacturing facilities are unfair wage practices, health violations, corruption of the freedom of association and captive and child labor. The unfair wage practices that exist are unexplained fines to workers on top of the minimal hourly pay along with a deduction in pay from unfair training fees.
Countries that have an abundance of low wage workers typically have the largest amount of unfair wage practices because the manufacturers can find any worker that they want to accept to the pay.
Many health and safety codes are also broken in the factories. Fire exits may be barricaded to prevent theft and this puts the workers in danger if a fire breaks out. Some workers who work with very noxious fumes are not even warned of the volatility of the chemicals or even given adequate ventilation when working with the chemicals.
