NCAA Violations
Recently many different universities have come under fire for a wide variety of NCAA violations. This does not sound that uncommon if you are familiar with college basketball. However, the startling thing is that the mistakes of former players and staff are hurting the success of current teams. I am going to focus on a couple of different specific cases. One dates back over ten years ago at the University of Michigan. The other is a very recent problem that has a rose at Baylor University. I hope to demonstrate why what is going on throughout the country is wrong. The most high profile case of players accepting cash and other gifts happened at the University of Michigan happened over ten years ago but just recently came to light. Ed Martin, a well-known, successful athletic booster at the school, told the federal government that he took gambling money, combined it with other funds, and lent $616,000 to former Wolverine basketball stars Chris Webber, Maurice Taylor, Robert Traylor, and Keith Bullock. Is any of this Coach Drew’s fault? No. Also, you can not blame the players for wanting to leave and actually still have a successful college career. These sanctions only hinder current staff and players. Why should a player who was only eight or nine years old when Chris Webber and the Fab Five were winning all those games have to pay now? Steve Fischer, the coach of the Wolverines back in this era gets to continue on with his career. He is currently the head coach at San Diego State University. While the current coach at Michigan, Tommy Amaker, has to suffer through seasons in which he knows no matter how well his team performs they will not have to chance to compete in the national tournament. These current players all signed national letters of intent to receive a scholarship to play at Michigan before any of these allegations came forth. Last year’s team finished up the season with a 10-6 record in the Big Ten conference and 17-13 overall. This probably would have been enough to qualify for the national tournament. However, the current players were at ho
