Conflict Resolution in Learning Teams

Conflict is inevitable. It occurs in groups of two or ten. Conflicts arise because of avoidance of issues, undue accommodation, or unrealistic compromise. Avoiding conflict, accommodating the needs of others, or compromising to “keep the peace,” may seem beneficial; however, learning to resolve conflict as it arises is more effective. Realizing conflict occurs when personalities clash with one another, differences of opinions arise, and cultural differences come into play, our team has committed to work through conflicts by utilizing open and honest communication. We are all God’s creatures, imperfect in every way; and none of us is exempt from conflict, as we know that no one is perfect. This realization, coupled with a plan of action, will ultimately help us work together to reach our greatest goal of obtaining our degrees.

Like the ostrich that puts his head in the sand to avoid the turmoil around him, some learning team members possess the same characteristic of “avoidance”, and are capable of utilizing the same tactic as the ostrich when under pressure. They avoid individual initiative, contribution to group efforts, and introduction of new ideas to their team members. T

An equally difficult, but sometimes is less obvious problem, in dealing with conflict in a team, is over-accommodation. Over-accommodation, if handled incorrectly, can potentially turn hazardous in any environment, whether it is a learning team, work, or at home. In team situations, one person or set of persons may disagree with the way a situation is being handled. However, instead of working through the problem, they decide the best course of action is simply to give in, possibly resulting in feelings of bitterness or anger. Once this occurs, it prevents the best solutions from being presented. People, who use over use accommodation as a coping mechanism, are frequently the ones who should not give in so easily, because they have a lot to contribute to the team. Nonetheless, when they do this it is because they are being too nice and do not want their actions to result in anyone’s feelings being hurt. Eventually, when team members are too accommodating, deadlines are not met, conflict is left unresolved, and the environment becomes toxic and unproductive.

When conflict raises its head, these individuals may tend to run away from the problem and hope that it goes away; which seldom resolves the issue at hand. To keep themselves at a safe distance, rather than confronting issues in person, they may complain or place blame by utilizing email or chat lines. Face-to-face communication is paramount if conflicts are to be resolved. Telling a third party, rather than addressing your concern with your team member, does not replace an in-person conversation.
