I am Sam

Jessie Nelson the director of the feature film ?I am Sam? positions the viewer to adopt a humanitarian attitude towards the main character, Sam. The values of western society are also challenged through techniques such as dialogue, characterization, actions and setting. The viewers are encouraged to empathize with Sam through the reaction of the general public towards his disability.

The dominant value in this feature film is that of love. A scene which demonstrates the power of love is when Sam and Lucy or on the swing together. The effect of white doves which fly past during a birds-eye-view shot at the beginning of the scene symbolizes the everlasting love between Sam and Lucy. Another technique employed in this scene is when the camera zooms in on Sam holding out his hand to Lucy this is symbolizing Lucy accepting her father as an intellectually challenged character. Lucy also demonstrates her love for her father in various other scenes.

The importance of love over anything else is evident throughout this film. The scene which highlights this the most is when Lucy is asked is she needs more than what her father can give her. Lucy?s reply to this is ?All you need is love.? The power of dialogue in this scene is by far

the most important as it persuades the audience to believe the attitude that love is all that matters. Another technique which is utilized in this scene is the symbolism of the television screen which the audience hear Lucy saying ?All you need is love? through, this enables the audience to relate to Sam feeling of isolation from his daughter.

At no point in the film does Nelson show Sam as being socially isolated he is surrounded by a group of friends who go to some extraordinary lengths to show their support for his custody case, on many occasions they publicly state their love for Lucy. Humour was used in the court room scene when Sam?s friends used placards saying ?Free Lucy Dawson?. Although many may view this scene with derision the director is attempting to show what length these people will go to support their friend. A further incident is demonstrated when Sam chooses not to go to their weekly video night preferring to remain with his lawyer, Rita. His friends are put out by his refusal and the scene shows them putting their cups down in a temperamental manor but then one of the friends invites Rita to join them. The social and intellectual gulf between Rita and Sam?s friends is highlighted here.

There are a number of scenes in the film which highlight the importance of parenthood, for not only the parent but the child as well. A specific scene which deals with this theme is when Sam tells Randy that he is unable
