Down syndrome

When learning something, the procedure takes time and practice. Sometimes it just takes more time for some people, depending on whatever the case may be. Learning English is a big procedure; this is one major step for a person to achieve. Everyone experiences problems that could delay the learning process, but what exactly could some factors be that could affect a person learning the English language.

Down syndrome individuals are born with brain abnormalities, which is already a setback for them learning English. Down syndrome is cause by excess of genetic material on chromosome 21. Down syndrome is noticeable after your one years old and the retarded language development affects further intellectual developments. Delayed language is identifiable at the age of 2. Delayed vocabulary development leads to further delay in the start of sentence formation. IQ scores are generally low in Down syndrome individuals. Information processing, attention, automatization and environmental adaptation are some things Down syndrome individuals struggle with. A virtually complete grammar will have been developed by age four or four and a half. This is true over a wide range of intelligence and environments. The learning takes place with little or no instructions. Language is a productive system. Formation of yes and no questions illustrates another kind of rule of transformation. Many conversations are not completely grammatical sentences. There are slips of the tongue, changes of topic in mid-sentence, forgetting of earlier words or phrases, sentences fragments, and so on. Also the child trying to learn the language isn’t even provided high quality information. Christian tells us “children are not capable of speech unless they have been exposed to human language. Infants that are raised together, without the influence of language, cannot develop speech. Any child will grow up speaking the language of their family or community regardless of their nationality, race or the language of their birth parents” (Arnold, 322). Not every person can be trained to play an instrument or be successful in a sport. Each person does have the ability to create various styles of speech and be creative with their own language. In fact, every new sentence spoken, or combination of words spoken, has probably never been said before in the exact same speech pattern.
