Self Reflection

The subjects of race and cultural identity can mean very different things to different people. What race means to a black man in the United States may be extraordinarily different than what it means to a white man in South Africa, or a Pakistani man living in England. Cultural identity, also, varies from person to person. Some may consider cultural identity to be a part of their heritage, while others consider their cultural identity to be the culture they belong to in the here and now. My own personal racial and cultural identities have had a profound influence on the way I have evolved as a person. (Racial and Ethnic Practices, Chapter 5)

The very definition of the words ‘race’ and ‘culture’ were not fully clear to me until very recently. A prime example is the ‘race’ of the Jews, which is simultaneously race and culture. By ‘culture’, one understands that the Jewish people unite through the use of faith and symbolism (such as the Star of David). Thus, the unity of the people goes beyond the physiological characteristics that often times define the Jewish race. The stereotypical Jew has dark, curly hair, dark eyes, and a more pronounced nose, but this is clearly not the case for every


Upon leaving Radford, I made the move to Southern Maryland. The move gave me the opportunity to finally interact with people with racial and cultural differences. I feel that I had no prejudicial or racist tendencies going into this exercise, mostly because I didn’t have any prior first-hand information on other races at all, good or bad. This gave me the opportunity to absorb a great deal from the many Oriental, Arabic, and African-American friends I made in the area.
