Casualties

Did you know that Casualties were not only people who died? A casualty could be someone who got captured and it could be someone who got lost or left behind. The American Civil War had more casualties than any other war fought in America. There were many causes for these casualties, some being deaths in prison, drowning, accidental deaths, murders, suicides, executions, and medical reasons.

In the American Civil War there were more than 24,000 people who died in prison. When soldiers in the Civil War were captured, they were put into prisons. Once the person was captured, they were already considered a casualty. A captured soldier was referred to as a prisoner of war. Some people died in prison because lack of proper medical care and basic human needs such as food.

Sometimes when soldiers were aiming for the enemy, somebody on their side of the war got in the way. Most of the soldiers did not notice this because they were protecting themselves from the enemy and were not paying attention to the people behind them that were firing at the enemy. These people did not notice that they were in the way and got shot by someone on their own side. About 4,000 soldiers died by this. When you are killed by someone on your own side, it is called Death by Friendly-Fire.

There is a difference between accidental death and murder. Murder is usually premeditated, while accidental death is not meaning at all to kill the person. When one human being takes the life of another human being with hatred it is considered murder. More than 500 people died with murder as the cause of their death. Death by murder implies that the death was unrelated to the central issues or disputes that caused the Civil War.
