Abortion rights

Everyday a new life is born and another one destroyed. People are murdered, some die of natural causes, others are killed in car accidents, but among the most controversial arguments to date is that of aborting a pregnancy. Abortion has been a controversial subject since the day it was possible. Prior to the 1860s, abortion was a very common method of birth control. The American Medical Association (AMA) launched a protest on the eve of the Civil War against abortions. Later, abortion was made illegal in almost every state because of rising moral sentiments and the fear of more childbearing among the Catholics than the Protestants. Finally, in 1973 Roe v. Wade was the first Supreme Court case regarding abortion rights. The decision made in this case overturned the state laws prohibiting abortion and this marked the rise of the Pro-Life movement. After Roe v. Wade a great deal of violence struck the United States. Bomb threats filled abortion clinics, mass rallies, murders of workers at abortion clinics, arrests, political parties almost defining themselves with the issue; the United States was in a state of pandemonium over abortion rights. Rulings by the Supreme Court continued and arguments flared. In 1989, the Court

supported the prohibition of public facilities or public personal to perform abortions. Later, in 1990, the Court passed laws requiring parental documentation or parental consent to perform the operation. Furthermore, in 1992, the Court issued that physicians are required to provide anti-abortion information and a 24-hour waiting period. Even with all the precautions and the 24-hour waiting period, some may not make up their mind and go along with it anyway, making a regrettable mistake. It is certain; abortion is a tool too powerful for humankind and should not be used aimlessly. It is a murder weapon, a genocidal tool that “safely and quietly” aborts a pregnancy, but ultimately takes a life away.

There are many complications that one could encounter when undergoing an abortion, though most are not very severe. When using medications for abortion (i.e. RU-486, a pill), one could experience heavy or prolonged bleeding and would eventually have to receive a suction aspiration and if the bleeding is worse, one may have to be hospitalized and receive a blood transfusion. There is a chance that the medication may not work at all but the abortion will have to be completed surgically. On a more serious note, many pro-lifers would say abortion is on the same lines as murder. Mother Teresa says, “The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between” (bartleby.com). The embryo inside the carrier’s womb potentially has a life. With all intents and purposes, a fetus is identical to a newborn child and essentially has a life. However, the fetus only has the intent of becoming human, so when does it actually become human? This is a question that cannot be accurately answered as it is based on opinion. Former President Ronal Reagan says in an NY Times article on medicine that, “Surgeons now speak of ‘the patient’ in the womb [and] for the first time … we’re able to see with our own eyes, on film, the abortion of a 12-week-ol
