Happiness in Life Horse Dealers

“There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved” - George Sand. This famous quote is found self evident in the following short stories; “The Lady with the Dog”, “Horse Dealer’s Daughter” and “In the Life”. Each author has fully expressed the ideals of romantic love as we know it. Indeed love is like the sun coming out of the clouds and warming your soul consequently it has many risks, joys and ironies.

Nevertheless, as seen in “The Lady with the Dog” by Anton Chekhov romance takes the role of a relationship that should not be. Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov a married middle aged man and Anna Sergeyevna a young married lady. Thus this is a very risky affair that these two individuals. Mr. Gurov had been unfaithful to his wife for awhile and considered woman “the lower race” (401); I find this ironic in the fact that Gurov falls in love with another married woman, Mrs. Sergeyevna. This was a secretly kept relationship; Mrs. Sergeyevna had come to Moscow to visit Mr. Gurov on several occasions that she had lied to her husband for these elongated trips. However Gurov did visit Sergeyevna at an opera house; here is a direct quote: “I am so unhap

And I wanted to forget, to forget you.”(410) this is Anna’s strong desire towards Dmitri, which she feels awkward about openly expressing. It can be found ironic that these two married individuals can deeply fall in love with one another; this is direct cheating and is very unethical in society. They should have both divorced than married instead of creating a complicated relationship.

On the contrary in the “Horse Dealer’s Daughter” by G.H. Lawrence; Dr. Jack Ferguesson finds love in the horse dealer’s daughter (Mabel Pervin) who feels outcasted by her brothers. She is rarely noticed as individual or even talks to her own brothers. However Mabel tends the house as long as her family has money, this makes her feels like an established person. On other hand J. Ferguesson is a doctor who travels the countryside in order to assist patients. I feel that Dr. Fergusson and Mabel have a natural attraction to each other, but are unable to show their true self due to their current situations. For instance they exchange glances as the doctor is on a call “Their eyes met. And each l
