Njal's Saga: A Story of Brutal Consequences

One thing that can definitely be said of the society that surrounded the characters in Njal’s Saga is that one should take great care in choosing his words. Most importantly, be careful not to make someone angry. In this day and age, a person could not afford to say or do the wrong things. As Gunnar could attest to, certain actions reap dangerous consequences--whether those actions be made with negative things in mind or not. One misstep could eventually lead to a person’s death, or may even cause a series of deaths. This was a common theme in Njal’s Saga.

Yes, even words could earn the wrath of someone willing to use deadly means to exact vengeance. Something as childish and seemingly harmless as an insulting nursery rhyme can do the trick. The exact thing happened when Sigmund Lambason, kinsman to Gunnar Hamundarson of Hlidarend, created a poem that was based on Hallgerd’s insults towards the Njalssons (Hallgerd called Njal “Old Beardless” and his sons were called “Little Dung-Beards”) (Njal’s Saga 114). Needless to say, this made some people very angry, and those people were the Njalssons--especially Bergthora, wife of Njal. Bergthora had a habit of taunting her sons into battle.
