Usability of an Interface
Assignment 1 – Usability of an InterfaceThis is a report / assignment which will analyze, investigate and evaluate the usability of Visual Basic.NET interface. I will be putting myself in the position of a user of the interface. A user interface is a program that controls a display for the user (usually on a computer monitor) and that allows the user to interact with the system. Visual Basic.NET is the next generation of Visual basic, it’s the new upgrade from Visual Basic 6.0, which obviously is designed to be easier to use and more productive. Visual Basic can be used to develop windows based applications and games. From what I have heard from other students and lecturers visual basic is supposedly easier to learn than other languages like C++ and java but I can’t clarify this as I only know the basics so far. Up until now I haven’t had any previous experience with Visual Basic, I’ve just mainly heard about. I just know the basics of it from playing about with it so I guess you could say I fall into the novice section. This still gives me enough knowledge in order to analyze Visual Basic.NET, weigh up its good aspects and bad aspects, gives me an opportunity to express my views and justify them.
On the right hand side of the screen you can see the various applications you have created and the forms within them. Below that is the properties window. Sometimes this just appears on the window by default but others it doesn’t which involves searching for it which I know from experience can be a time consuming and difficult task. In order to view the properties dialog if it doesn’t already appear as default you have to go to the top right hand side of the page where there are four icons in a group and select the second icon from your left. The icon isn’t really relevant although it’s not really possible to create a relevant icon for properties. A possible change that could be made here is to have text under the icons so you can tell what they are. In the properties dialog you can change the text on a button and give it a name, change colour of form or button, change size of button e.t.c. It can be difficult to find the name and text in properties sometimes I think this is due to the headings like accessibility and appearance being in such a light grey colour and if it was a darker colour you would be able to identify the properties under those headings easier. I found it very easy and efficient the creation of objects on the form. Quite a simple process, just involved opening the toolbox and dragging the required function wether that may be a command button, label whatever onto the form. By creating an object on the form this automatically generates the basic outline of the code which saves time, and consistently having to type it. This is one feature which particularly impressed me. Below you can see the code that has been created for a command button. To access the code of that button all I have to is double click on it and that will bring the cursor into the middle of the code so I can fill in the in between bits.
