Da shedmen

When growing up in a city, you don’t really get to experience the closeness as if you’ve grown up in a smaller town or bay. It seems to me that those who have grown up in these bays and towns know more about their community’s local folklore, when it comes to nicknames of certain places, people, and traditions. When I meet people with these types of backgrounds, they always have a few stories to tell about were there from. When I think of were I was raised, Mt. Pearl I can’t seem to remember any nicknames with regards to local hang outs, riffraff’s or community traditions. But I have experienced a few good nicknames through friends and family, here are a some dating back as far as elementary school and as recent as a year or two ago.

I am part of a group, that some refer to as “Da Shedmen” the group consists of four people, Bulls Eye Barns (me), Fat Fingers Farrell (Mike Farrell), Hussey Gussey (Blair Dune), and Doubles Duggan (Mike Duggan). A few winters back the four of us were finding ourselves very bored on the weekends, so one Saturday night we decided to dig out the shed in my backyard, throw a load of wood in the fireplace, play some darts, watch the hockey game, and have a few beers. We enjoy

Tony is one of my brother’s friends and a close family friend. As his age progressed the years weren’t to good to him, he started gaining some excess weight, which seemed to go straight to his chest and stomach area. Tony noticed this about himself and started working out at the gym. One night about four years ago my brother’s (Damien,Corey,Ben), Tony, and me were drinking at the house getting ready to hit George Street. Tony had a new shirt on that was a little tight and every time he was walking around you could see his breasts jiggle a bit. We all noticed but never said anything to Tony about it, until Tony made a comment to my brother, “man, I can feel my stomach and chest tightening up from working out”. With that my brother Damien said “yes by,Fony Titzs we can see ya jiggling around all night”, we all had a good laugh out of it, even Tony. Tony never wore the shirt again, well not around us and ever time one of my brothers or I are talking to Tony we ask him “where’s your new shirt Fony Titz”. The name stuck but the only ones who call him this are my family members, Tony gets a laugh out of it but we don’t call him this in public because I don’t think he’d appreciate it very much.

Mike is another one of Da Shedmen, His nickname also comes from our pass time of playing darts. When playing darts Mike would always pick up a screwdriver or nail to put into the rotary dials on the scoreboard, when changing his score. There wasn’t much thought of it until one night he couldn’t find a anything close at hand to change his score, he was digging through the shed making a mess of everything, trying to find something for him to put his score in. Then Duggan pipes up “Farrell what the hell are you doing, can’t you just change the score with your fingers.” Farrell replies, “No it hurts, it tried it one night and my fingers can hardly fit in the dials after that they were killing for a few days.” Then Duggan says, “Yes by, what are your fingers to fat.” We all started making fun of his rather large extremities and calling him Fat Fingers Farrell, that was when the name stuck because we found it quite funny and Farrell didn’t seem to take to it, which made it even funnier. Fat Fingers Farrell doesn’t take criticism to well, he shays away from it and gets easily embarrassed when you poke fun at him. That is probably why the name stuck so quickly. We all get a good kick out of teasing and making fun of each other especially when the person who is being made fun of doesn’t really like it. We only call him this while were playing darts or in a small crowd of the boys, because we don’t think Mike would appreciate it if everyone were calling him this.

One of my friends, Billy Kelly has an assortment of nicknames mainly because of his actions and personality. There are three names you can use when talking about Billy, Unreliable Bill, Smoken Mirrors Bill, and Mysterious Bill. Billy is the type of person that when you ask him a question, he won’t give you a full or direct answer. He always fades away form what you asked him or doesn’t give you the whole truth. He also cuts sentences short and gives you nonchalant replies like, I don’t know by, whatever, who cares by, etc… When Billy has plans to go out somewhere, he won’t tell any one were he’s going or what he’s doing. These are the reasons why he has the nicknames Smoken Mirrors Bill and Mysterious Bill. I don’t know when these two nicknames were put on Billy but we have been using them for a few years. The nickname Unreliable Bill came about three summers ago, when we all made plans with Billy to go to his cabin in Long Harbor. There were three carloads of us that packed up and headed to the cabin, Billy was driving up a few hours latter because he had some stuff to do before hand. We got to the cabin and started having couple of drinks on the patio after some time passed we got worried because Billy never showed up, we
