Civil Disobedience and the Earth Liberation front

Civil Disobedience and the Earth Liberation front

By causing economic sabotage and property damage, The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) has declared to the public that it is unjust for organizations to profit from the ruining of mother nature. The ELF was founded in Brighton, England in 1992 by a group called “Earth First”. (www.abc.com) With a main goal of showing the public the importance of preserving the environment and saving the life of any living organism, the ELF proudly claims responsibility for deliberately destructive actions. The Earth Liberation Front displays many elements of civil disobedience in their actions. They break laws to manifest a particular call for action using symbolic, non-violent, and public procedures. ELF members are not willing to serve prison terms, or pay the consequences for their actions, which causes their proposed end to fail. The strategies used by the ELF bring issues to light, but have no significant impact in effecting change.

The various, vicious actions of the ELF communicate to the public that certain organizations’ practices are unjust. For example, drastic measures are taken by ELF members to show the importance of preserving the environment. Countless acts of civ

The individual ELF members responsible for the Vail Resorts fires did not come forward and admit guilt, nor did they go to jail. King, who was willing to suffer the

Serving jail sentences might help ELF be more effective in achieving their desired outcome. A comment made in the ELF frequently asked questions states: “The idea is not for the members to be rotting away in prisons, but rather to be free each and every day to continue their heroic actions.” (ELF FAQs, page 24) This representation of policy might cause more events to be carried out, but based on King’s ideology, it is not considered a full act of civil disobedience. This could be one reason that the ELF’s ravaging of Vail Resorts did not prevent the expansion. According to Martin Luther K
