Roman Mysticism |

In Roman times there were no textbooks with answers to their many questions. So no one had factual explanations to questionable things. This is how the Roman’s first started to spread their theories on: superstitions; omens; G-ds; the Sibylline Books; ghosts; necromancy; and oracles. What all these forms of mysticism have in common is that they were all used to explain unexplainable phenomenon and to foretell the future.
In primitive societies, like the Romans, objects and living beings were believed to possess special spiritual properties. Many landscapes like: rocks; caves; lakes; swamps; rivers; mountains; and valleys were all believed to hold these properties. It was not just the landscape that they thought had the spiritual properties though but also animals and even furniture! Parents would tell stories to children as well explaining that bad behavior would result in being eaten by nasty creatures.(Ward 103-117)

Below are additional random excerpts from the paper...
Like many ancient civilizations the Ancient Romans believed in ghosts. They believed both in ghosts that seemed to be reluctant to show themselves as well as ghosts that were very active. The ghosts that were very active were convenient for magical exploitation and these can be broken down into four categories of “restless dead.” One category was those dead before their time. Another category was those whose violence resulted in their death. There were those who died before marriage and those who were deprived of a proper burial. (Ogden 146-154)
In conclusion the Romans employed various forms of mysticism like: superstitions; omens; G-ds; the Sibylline Books; ghosts; necromancy; and oracles, in order to explain unexplainable phenomenon and to foretell the future.
