Damnation Of A Canyon
If you ask me, it was a really bad idea; apparently however others do not. I think the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam helped only those that care only for their own personal enjoyment and not for the future generations of the world, some may call them Republicans. In the past week I have been studying the work of Edward Abbey called “damnation of a canyon” Published in The Allen and Bacon Guide to Writing, New York, 2003. Abbey Too, disagrees with the Construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, it’s in the title. Abbey starts his article, by explaining what he remembers the canyon to be. After which he explains what it was like while he was a ranger for the newly constructed reservoir. The third thing Abbey talks about in his article; what are the consequences of building the dam and filling the canyon with water. Fourth he continues with arguments against those in favor of the dam. The fifth and last thing he talks about; the government said that the dam would open up the area to those who could not afford it before; this is not rue Abbey says.
Another issues that I would like to touch on; some of the arguments those in favor of the dam are unbelievable. I don’t understand how anyone could possibly say the recreational benefits on the surface of Lake Powel will outweigh the loss of Indian ruins, landmarks, the history of our very nation, buried under hundreds of feet of water. I will never be able to enjoy the amazing, endless beauty of Glen canyon, I don’t think that building the Dam was an absolutely terrible idea. There are many things that I do agree with in Abbey’s article; there are a few things that I do disagree with. First lets touch on the Consequences of filling the dam with water. The Bathtub Ring, this to many people would be a bad thing, but as a photographer it could be quite dramatic, though it is not at all natural it can still create some very unique photo ops. Along with filling the dam can the destruction of the habitat on the floor of the canyon, once filled with thickets, songbirds, killdeer, sandpiper, heron, ibises; all kinds of wildlife using that canyon as a refuge now are
