Going along with this theme of proofs that I have established, there comes the proverbial “fork” in the road when selecting beliefs. There is also Atheism of course. Firstly, St. Anselm’s Ontological proof of the existence of God. St. Anselm said, “I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe in order to understand. For this also I believe, that unless I believed, I should no t understand”(Palmer, 161). St. Anselm states that he first puts his faith and God, a blind faith, in order to understand God, not the other way around. And through without this belief at first, one would not come to understand. The argument states that God by definition is absolutely perfect. It then becomes more perfect to exist than not to exist, so surely if one could imagine a perfect being it must therefor exist in reality. This argument strong points are not in its meaning, but in its wording. Not only is it hard to understand, it is also very hard to debunk as well. Those who challenge it are hit with hypocritical labels, and are forced to re-evaluate their values. However, this argument lacks in the development department though, because it seems to jump from pure thought, to pure truth, this is its biggest weakness. St. Anselm seems to believe he can justify all thought being reality, when there is obviously no study done in that area, and as a matter of fact is certainly not true. Lastly is the Teological proof of the existence of God. The majority of this theory is also accredited to St. Thomas Aquinas, and once again provides a totally different outlook than the others. Aquinas states that all things are acting under a basic need(however complex you may think it is, it’s not!!), the need for an end. People see, because they need to walk, they eat, or else they will starve, and etc. This argument supposes that there must be one awesome being up in the heavens directing all people to their ultimate end. Whatever that is is not defined by Aquinas, but I think its fairly obvious. Moving on...there are two main theories that debunk this entire argument.
