Greek Heritage in New York City

The Greek Americans are relatively a historical group of people. The Greeks, like other Europeans came to America for better opportunities and to experience achievement and personal attributes. Greeks have always considered their Greek language to be a binding force for their ethnic identity. Evidence for their endurance and maintenance for their Greek language is visibly seen in the history of Greece when during the Ottoman Empire times the Greek children were going to the Krifa Sholia or hidden schools to preserve the language and religion. This perpetuation of Greek language and the Greek Orthodox Faith has remained until today. Ethnic language and culture maintenance efforts of certain educational institutions and educators in the United States have met with major obstacles. Although in many respects New York and generally America is a multilingual, multicultural nation, many of its citizens hold a negative view on bilingualism.
