Love transformations

Transformation can happen to anyone, but the cause and type of the transformation can vary greatly from person to person. Throughout this unit we have seen examples of the transformation of love among characters and ideas in the poems we have read. Although the cause and outcome of the transformations vary, they stay between two variables. They transform in a physical manner or a psychological manner. The two types of transformations can and do meet each other in the examples we have read. These transformations mold and help create a new and more beautiful meaning to love the characters experience.

First we examine “Pygmalion and Galatea.” This story has a prime example of the transformation of love. The story begins by introducing Pygmalion. He is a skilled sculptor who “resolved never to marry. His art, he told himself, was enough for him”(110). Though he felt this way, Pygmalion greatest work was that of a woman. He sculpted a statue of women so perfect “no woman ever born, no statue ever made, could approach it”(110). Shortly after this Pygmalion fell deeply in love with his statue. It was as though he felt it was a real woman “…no one would have thought it was ivory or stone,

Our second work focuses more on the psychological transformations of love. “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun”, transforms the idea of love into their own unique type of love. In this poem Shakespeare takes the idea of love as a more physical attraction and shows us how it can be transformed into something more exclusive. Throughout the poem we are shown how he does not see his mistress and associate her with grace and beauty. When speaks of her lips “Coral is far more red than her lips’ red”(767), we are given the unmistakable impression that she does not have the most luscious lips. To continue the realization of his mistress’ physical appearance he speaks of her breath “… in some perfumes is there more delight than in the breath that from my mistress reeks”(767). Shakespeare compares his mistress to a goddess, but does not abide by what we might expect him to say in a normal love poem. Instead he shows us how she is the exact opposite “ I grant I never saw a Goddess go; my mistress, when she walks, treads the ground”(767). It becomes clear to us that he looks past the blindness that love can cause. Shakespeare turns the poem around and presents his love for his mistress “and yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare as any she belied with f
