Offred is the main character in the novel, and she is a victim of the regime whose only reason to exist depends on her birth productivity. She lives with her Commander as his wife who she produces babies for. Women have been facing problems for centuries and often times they experience harassment and discrimination. Throughout the novel the issue of women’s lack of freedom recaps through the novel. Ever since the new regime, women are no longer allowed to be themselves: Their own names are taken away and replaced with names that varied depending on the commander that they served. “

Flowers are still allowed. Does each of us have the same print, the same chair, the same white curtains, I wonder? Government issues?” (Atwood, pg.220)Handmaids think about how they are living and feel that they can not be differentiated from other Handmaids because that is how the government controls everything. They can only be different from each other based on their fertility and the number of successful births. It extremely difficult for women to deal with the new regime and their rules because the former days allowed them to do what ever they wanted; they had freedom of speech and freedom of expression, however, now things are not like that any more, all the things they were allowed to do can no longer be done. Instead of being known as a person or individual with names, they are now known by assigned levels or groups of people with assigned jobs. Women are now given specific colours to wear representing their position in the new regime and they cannot talk, walk, or even eat what they would like to eat without permission. Since the women’s role is ultimately to breed and nothing more; the regime feels that what they order women to do sufficient to keep them content.

The Handmaid’s Tale deals with females being unable to face problems created against them. This matter has been talked or mentioned by many authors, though some problems are unavoidable, one can overcome certain situations by being more assertive. Along with male domination and the laws of society, women have contended with other challenging and oppressing situations. Despite this, women in modern society are becoming more powerful but it is unknown whether the power will strike them or help them reach another level.
