“A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “ Good Country People”

Flannery O’ Conner expresses his writing through many diverse elements and ideas. The two short stories “ A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People” have similar meanings that are portrayed in situations that are different. The characters, the titles, the diction, for example, all relate to each other in both of the two stories. These points given contribute to the overall meaning that O’ Conner is trying to portray.

By the plot of the stories that O’ Conner wrote, tells the reader that she has a strong background of religion. She seemed a very devoted Catholic and obviously expressed that in both stories. In “ Good Country People” the “bible salesman” is a large character in the story. Irony is expressed many times. “You ain’t so smart. I been believing in nothing ever since I was born.” (142) You would think that being a bible salesman meant that he believe in what the bible teaches. In “A


The women O’ Conner uses in the stories are very old fashioned. They are devoted wives and not so much independent. They seem naive too, or act least act like it. The grandmother in “A Good Man…” is very “ remember the old days…” type of lady that wants a say in everything and obviously cannot keep her mouth shut. The mother in the same story was very serene and followed orders. She did not want to start trouble and went along with it all. This contradiction between the mother and the father’s mother showed how they view their place in society. The names of Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman suggest that women in their time and society wanted to be “free” and needed “hope.”

The diction and phrases in both stories went along the irony theme. There was much talk about “nice people,” “a good man,” “real honest people” and yet the characters, such as Bailey and his family, and Joy/Hulga and her family, did not encounter these sorts of people, thus making the titles have
