DAVID MALOUF – DREAM STUFF

I am going to talk about David Malouf's short story Dream Stuff, largely focusing on the main character Colin. Colin, like most of Maloufs' characters is very complex and because of this is difficult to relate to and has a sense of anonymity to him. As Malouf likes to create a great deal of mystery and speculation in his stories, Colin's whole story is not known, and knowing Colin as a character is important for subsequent judgements to be formed regarding him and the events of the story.

The way that Malouf creates Colin, his anonymity, the events that take place, the emotions described (or rather the emotions NOT described) seems to mirror the other characters' feelings towards Colin. There is the impression that no one actually understands Colin, no one knows exactly how he would react in a situation, what he truly thinks and feels about things, almost as though he is a stranger to those closest to him. He can't properly communicate with them, whether he is unable because his pride and defensiveness get in the way or because it is something he picked up from his mother.

Colin's mother also possessed this trait. She is not understood. Colin couldn’t speak with her while he was growing up

Writing was Colin's escape, he could be as extravagant as he liked with his emotions, there was no one there talking back to him so he could say what he liked, and he loved that. This caused more tension in his real life, the more he wrote, the less he spoke, the more difficult it became for Colin to express himself verbally, directed at a person, and the easier he found it to write with the passion that his life lacked.

Coralie, Colin's cousin is another person that Colin had become isolated from, their relationship was the opposite of the one that Colin had with his mother. When they were growing up, Colin and Coralie were the best of friends, told each other everything, but when Colin moved to London their relationship deteriorated, they could no longer go back to the way things were, had nothing in common, and Coralie was a great concern of Jane's, often the subject of their ridiculous joking arguments. Colin could not tell either Jane or Coralie what he thought, and so he became distant from both of them, and started writing.

His mother felt the same; her letters to Colin were "warm, inventive and humorously critical of everything she came across". This is Colin's first clue to her being not entirely honest with him, this was not
