DAVID MALOUF – DREAM STUFF
I am going to talk about David Malouf's short story Dream Stuff, largely focusing on the main character Colin. Colin, like most of Maloufs' characters is very complex and because of this is difficult to relate to and has a sense of anonymity to him. As Malouf likes to create a great deal of mystery and speculation in his stories, Colin's whole story is not known, and knowing Colin as a character is important for subsequent judgements to be formed regarding him and the events of the story.The way that Malouf creates Colin, his anonymity, the events that take place, the emotions described (or rather the emotions NOT described) seems to mirror the other characters' feelings towards Colin. There is the impression that no one actually understands Colin, no one knows exactly how he would react in a situation, what he truly thinks and feels about things, almost as though he is a stranger to those closest to him. He can't properly communicate with them, whether he is unable because his pride and defensiveness get in the way or because it is something he picked up from his mother. Colin's mother also possessed this trait. She is not understood. Colin couldn’t speak with her while he was growing up
