A seperate peace


            In Webster's dictionary, "popular" means, "liked by the people" or " very well liked by ones friends and acquaintances". Phineas is properly described by this definition, he fits the criteria and he himself seems perfect in almost everyway. In A Separate Peace, Finny is the all star of the school and respectably is the friendliest person of all. Finny's powerful, charismatic figure inspires good in everyone's heart in Devon, his spirit never fades and he is strong in almost every perspective. The all American, Phineas: self confident, extremely likeable, and the best athlete in the school, but his fatal flaw of assuming the best in everyone was his downfall.
             His self-confidence and unnecessary thought of what people thought about him gained him popularity and trusting friendships. Finny is comfortable enough with himself to say to Gene, "Proper person is your best friend" "Which is what you are" (pg 48). Although Gene thought that exposing that feeling was like "suicide", he also believed that Finny showed bravery and self confidence. To be able to tell someone that you love them, especially from a guy to a guy, describes that person as a self confident person. Finny's self confidence makes himself believe that Gene didn't have anything to do with him falling off the tree, he doesn't want to believe it because all he sees in Gene is a best friend which is loyal and faithful. Therefore Finny trust everyone to his fullest extent. Him believing that everyone is like him makes him have no doubt about anyone. Finny shows no weakness to shyness and feels comfortable with himself to his fullest extent. .
             Finny was the "all American boy next door", which befriended people with his good looks and his charm. Although Finny is only a C average student, his mind is as sharp as can be and he charm's himself out of any predicament to elude an argument or escape punishment. Finny try's to avoid argument and punishment by using his charm and his unique class of friendliness.
