A Dangerous Past

“Keep the rubber side down.” This is a common quote among motorcycle riders. Almost every writer who was himself a rider would always end his story or article with this phrase. This quote hurts the reputation of motorcycles in the minds of those who do not ride. It creates the assumption that every person who owns a motorcycle will end up on their head. With research into the history and background of the motorcycle, I will prove that the motorcycle can be closely related to the car in safety issues if the bike is used correctly. This two wheeled machine has been referred to as a “murdercycle” by many people who do not know about the topic. The assumption that a motorcycle is unsafe is bias and unfair. The motorcycle was originally invented as a cheaper, useful alternative to the car. It originated as being just as safe as the four wheeled opponent but evolved into a modern day “killing machine.” Many people think that the motorcycle is more dangerous because of the laws such as non-mandatory helmets. These types of laws make the general public think that they are unsafe. Statistically the motorbike is not much different in accident percentages then that of a car. Overall the over-exaggerated stereo

type that owning a motorcycle is automatic death is not true. To understand the real truth one must first know the motorcycle’s background.

Can these misconstrued views be fixed? Unfortunately, No. The idea has already been implanted and there is no way to dig it out. This is a flaw of the “group think” aspect of human nature. Society feeds off each other until the things are seen as so dang evil that they will eventually become illegal. It is always about the majority. Tobacco products kill more people each year then crime, drugs, alcohol, and car accidents COMBINED. However, it is still legal because the majority of the people who have the power, i.e. media, say so. Motorcycles are dangerous because the majority of the people say so. I speak from experience. I can through around statistics and data to my parents all day long but nothing can remove the idea that “motorcycles are bad” from their heads. This is a losing battle that will eventually result in extinction.

Moreover, 41 percent of the 1,203 motorcycle operators who were killed in single-vehicle crashes were intoxicated. This amazing statistic means in almost half of the cases of death that involved motorcycles the rider was drunk. The percentage of alcohol involvement was about 50 percent higher for motorcyclists than it is for passenger cars. This is not saying that fifty percent more of motorcycle riders drive drunk it is saying that a motorcycle does require more skill to drive than the common passenger car, but this is why it is illegal to drive under-the-influence. This stereotype is coming from the wrong resources. More than half of the fatal car accidents in this country were related to alcohol, killing 22,083 people. This is the equivalent of a fully loaded 747 crashing. Three times a week. Every week. . . More than 1.5 million car drivers were arrested for driving under-the-influence of alcohol or narcotics. This is an arrest rate of 1 for every 121 licensed. About 3 in every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol related accident in their lives. First of all, cars are much more dangerous than motorcycles, but it is the driver that makes them unsafe. The most common accidents happened because the driver was impaired, not because the vehicle was not safe or the safety laws are out of date and useless. Statistics like these make me want to stay away from the road altogether. This also goes to prove that it is not a “murdercycle.” If anything the road in general should be called the “killing machine” but that is off topic… The relative percentages of car crashes and deaths are far higher than that of motorcycles.

Overall, the deadly accidents that people hear about are not the fault of an unsafe vehicle but the abuse of a mode of transportation. What is worse are the accidents in cars that the people do not hear about. The finial verdict is that motorcycles are not unsafe they are just as safe if not more so than cars. Saying a car is safe is an overstatement but people get the false impression
