Patrick Henry was born in Hanover County, Virginia on May 29, 1736, to John and Sarah Winston Henry. After Henry’s business failed, he studied law and earned his law license in 1760. He made a name for himself in winning the Parson's Cause, during which he argued that a king who would veto a law passed by a locally elected legislature was "a tyrant who forfeits the allegiance of his subjects." This was the beginning of his struggle to ensure freedom for the 13 Colonies. In 1764, Henry was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. Patrick Henry’s life and work also exemplified exterior freedom. An example of this would be when Henry delivered his most famous speech, which ended in “as for me, give me liberty or give me death." Here Henry was working for American freedom from Britain’s unfair taxes and restrictions. Another occasion when Henry was working for exterior freedom was when he drafted the religious freedom section of the Virginia State Constitution. By doing this he ensured freedom from religious persecution in Virginia, which was non-existent in some of the other colonies where being a catholic made you a target for crimes.
