Vast Distances and Vast Differences
The differences between the eastern United States and the western United States are very vast. While the west is very “laid back”, the east remains the economic, and financial capital of the country. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick Callaway’s view points are very different from the view points of Tom Buchanan. Nick is disturbed by Tom and Gatsby’s actions. The differences between the adulterous relationships of Tom and Gatsby are like the differences of east and west. In the east business is the first priority. Business is put in front of family, love, and even oneself. In the west things are slower and more conventional. Marriage is made for love, not for sex and money. Nick is bothered by Tom’s affair with Myrtle because Nick is not used to seeing that sort of behavior. But he is slightly less bothered by Gatsby’s affaire because it is based on love. But as described by the novel everybody had a mistress of some sort. And it was not looked upon badly, at least not by the eyes of Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. When Nick is told by Jordan that Tom has a woman in the city Nick’s first probable reaction was “what”. But neither Jordan nor Daisy seemed to be bothered by this fact. When Nick
Gatsby Nick if he could have a tea party at his house to Meet Daisy. Nick agrees because he knows that Gatsby truly loves Daisy. Gatsby, born in North Dakota, still clings on to the country beliefs. He met Daisy as a young military officer in Louisville before leaving to fight in World War I. Gatsby immediately fell in love with Daisy’s aura of luxury, grace, and charm, and lied to her about his own background in order to convince her that he was good enough for her. Daisy married Tom while Gatsby was at Oxford. From that moment on, Gatsby dedicated himself to winning Daisy back, and his acquisition of millions of dollars, his purchase of a gaudy mansion on West Egg, and his lavish weekly parties are all merely an attempt to get daisy back. Gatsby has literally created his own character, even changing his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby just so he can reinvent himself into a respectful rich man. Situated at the end of Daisy’s East Egg dock and barely visible from Gatsby’s West Egg lawn, the green light represents Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for a future with Daisy. Gatsby associates it with Daisy, and in he reaches toward it in the darkness as a guiding light to lead him to his goal. Gatsby hopes and dreams are on the other side of the bay. All of his possessions were purchased only to obtain the green light. Because of this Gatsby’s affaire
