“Asses the claim that membership of EMU is primarily driven

When the European Union (EU), or the European Community as it was called, started in 1957 its goal was to unite the European countries in a strive towards peace (J. McCormic, 1999). The development from community to a union has been a success in most aspects, and peace has been preserved for almost 60 years. But the integration did not stop and has since its start just grown into more and more areas. The unification of Europe has been a slow but steady progress, that now in 2003 has integrated the citizens of Europe in a way that looked impossible when it first started. We have over the years seen the Single European Market (SEM) almost completed its 1340 separate pieces of legislation (J.McCormick , 1999) that has aloud free movement of people, capital, and almost all barriers to trade. The latest big step towards further integration in the EU has been the formation of the European Monetary Union (EMU) and the launch of a single currency , the Euro. This essay will discuss the political and economical factors that a membership in the EMU will raise.

The main body of this essay will discuss the political drive that a membership in EMU imposes. The economical implication the EMU poses for companies,

In countries where the Euro exists prices are now transparent, which means prices can easily be compared between countries; this should in the long run bring prices down and benefit the consumer. The same thing goes for wages, which can now bee compared across borders, that hopefully, in the long run, will lead to equal pay for men and women in all trades through Europe, something Sweden along with Finland has fought hard to accomplish in their own countries as well as in the EU over the years.

Some argue that EMU is a political project with negative economical consequences, were monetary sovereignty, and democratic freedom is taken away from their countries. This may all be true as well as arguing for the economical benefits and the further integration of Europe. The EU is working towards becoming a political union; EMU is a step in that direction. EMU is politics, but also economics.
