Nowadays, there’s a notorious tendency in American society towards thinness and fitness. Obesity is one of the main causes of decease among people today, and even the White House has taken aim at it. But, for a real change to be applied, people has to be re-educated in the subjects of food and dietary information, and restaurants have to make an emphasis on nutritional information, so that people can make a good choice when it comes to ordering.From my point of view, taking those steps towards a healthy life-style is not wrong, provided it does not turn into an obsession, since that cannot be good. One thing is to be able to decide what you want to eat and what you don’t, since you and you alone can decide what’s good for you; another thing, a very different one, is to be said what is good for you. I think that would take the pleasure off of eating; we can’t deny that having a meal is not only a question of nutrition, but also a question of pleasure. Whenever I go shopping, I watch out for products that might be considered “unhealthy”. A good approach is to check the dietary information that is included on packaged food products; i
n that way, I can be well informed of the calories and nutrients included in said product, and I can decide whether it will be a good choice to buy it or not. Besides this, I think people has to know what it means when a product is described as “light” or “free” of carbohydrates, since some of these products may be full of chemicals to balance the absence of those carbohydrates. Information is, in these cases, the best tool we have. Nevertheless, I think that a good diet on its own does not perform miracles. Physical activities have to be included as well, since a change in your diet can imply a decrease in the amount of energy for the body. Besides, a sport like footing, for example, does not only help you to keep your body fit, but also your mind, and it’s just what the doctor ordered. In my case, I try not to get frantic about this subject. I watch what I eat, and I try to get some exercise to keep body and mind fresh and active, but without obsessing about it, since obsessing is a part of the problem, and not a part of the solution.
