David and goliath

As I walked around the Princeton Art Museum I looked for the one plate that really stood out to me. I walked around for a good thirty minutes. All the plates looked started looking identical to each other… till I saw it! Folio 28 verso stood out to me like a person wearing a raincoat on a hot summers day. There was something about it.

Perhaps the “thing” about it was how graphic it appeared to be. The plate illustrated a head being cut off and bleeding all over the place. I immediately wanted to know about the story behind this explicit picture and why it was so illustrative.

The story behind David and Goliath is David was a young shepherd boy who watched his father's sheep. He fed them and kept them safe from being eaten by lions and bears. When David was alone with the sheep in the meadows he would spend time praising and talking to God. David loved to play his harp. He would write songs and sing praises to God. One day, David's father asked him to take food to his three brothers who were in the army for the nation of Israel. David was not afraid to go to the place where the soldiers were fighting. David trusted God to take care of him. When David found his brothers, they were not fightin

In the second section of the plate, David is cutting off Goliath’s head as the disappointed Philistines watch. The Philistine’s seem to be horrified at the mortifying sight. They seem to be scared of what can come out of this situation. At this point I also noticed all the characters in the plate never look forward. They look as if they are involved in their own world. Goliath’s sword from the first section is overlapped into the second section and ironically touching David who is cutting off his head. Goliath’s sword never seems to be completely within it’s own border. The feet of David and Goliath never seem to be within it’s own border either. There is something unique about the tree in the second section. I think it can be looked at as the tree of life. The tree of life often symbolizes sin or mortality. There obviously is mortality taking place within this section. There isn’t just the death of Goliath taking place. I believe the death of the Philistine’s hope and spirit is taking place too. Another distinctive issue happening with the Philistine’s facial expressions is how only two of the three heads are looking at the slaying of Goliath. The two faces that are looking at the killing of their giant look disturbed as the one face looking away seems to have a little smirk on his face. The arrows they are holing are also out of the border along with the strings of the helmet that has fallen off of Goliath when he was taken down by David. David sword is out of the border too.

Goliath came out again as he did every day, and said "Choose someone to come and fight me." When little David came out Goliath started laughing. Goliath said, "Am I a small animal like a dog that you send someone with just a stick to fight me? Come any closer, and I will kill you and leave your body for the birds and wild beasts to eat."

David ran forward with a stone in his sling, whirled it around and let go of one end. The stone flew straight up and hit Goliath in the middle of his forehead. The giant, Goliath, fell facedown to the ground. David ran to the giant and climbed on his back, and he stood tall so everyone could see that David won the battle. Then David took Goliath's sword and cut off the giants head.

I guess the cliché saying, a picture is worth a thousand words relates well to Plate XVI and all the other pieces of art work in the Book of the Kings. The book of Kings, also called the Morgan Picture Bible was designed to bring certain Old Testament stories into the thirteenth-century. The creators bring the stories to life with the vivid colors and by placing the biblical heroes in a contemporary setting.

There is a few main points to this story. One main
