Consequences of Change in selected texts

It affects everybody, everyday in both minor and major dynamics. To undergo a change there is a beginning, a process and an end result. The consequences of change relate to this end result, and can be both positive and negative in nature. The composers of the texts Looking for Alibrandi, Remember the Titans and Sturt's Dreaming employ a wide array of techniques to represent the consequences of change and to convey their meaning.
In the prose text Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta, the main character Josie Alibrandi experiences changing perspectives of herself and of others. In particular, Josie's changing perspective of Nonna Katia. This process of change has many positive consequences, including developing a newfound respect for her grandmother and beginning to accept her family and racial background. Josie says in chapter twenty-six "Relief because I was beginning to feel free," after coming to terms with Katia's affair and realising she is not angry with her. The syntax in this quote is deliberately used by the composer to succinctly convey Josie's feelings and to represent the consequence of the change, which includes an understanding of her racial background. The emotive language in this quote, as well as words including "promise," "prayed" and "blessed" in the next chapter work effectively to show the positive nature of the change that has occurred. Through the text Nonna's "Sicily Stories" are used as a motif to convey change, and the way in which Josie responds to these represent the consequences. Where Josie previously groans and reacts to the tales with negative comments and sarcasm as seen in "I sighed, knowing that unless I gave her my full attention she wouldn't stop," once the process of change has occurred Josie is content to listen to her grandmother and hear her stories. The consequence of this change is most effectively represented by Marchetta at the end of chapter twenty-six, "I stayed with her that night in the past I've had to be bribed to stay with Nonna Katia but I wanted to stay with this woman- .
