Steroids and sports
It is amazing what athletes will do to get ahead of their game, to gain levels of performance that go way beyond there normal abilities and strengths to jump ahead of the competition. Often people do not realize the long term effects that steroids have on one person’s life. Steroids became a spreading exposure to athletes in the Olympics and other major sporting events in the 1950’s. After the Canadian sprint runner Ben Johnson tested positive for steroids in the Olympics in 1985 after winning the gold meddle in the hundred meter dash, that was when steroids started to become obvious to athletes. It isn't just the big body builder and the pro athletes that you will catch using steroids, alot of the time it is just your average person like you or me, just wanting to get ahead of the game and have that advantage over everyone else. As I have known from personal experience, you can walk into any gym and you will always find that one guy who is bigger then everyone else. You often ask yourself, is that natural? There is no way it can be, what's he on? As an athlete I have been tempted many times to go juice it, or as you would say, take steroids. But there is a line that you cross when you take steroids, and once you pop that pil
l or push that needle there is no turning back. You are no longer able to talk about the other guy who took steroids because you took them yourself. There should be no controversy over steroid use in athletes; it is an illegal drug that is banned by most, if not all, major sports organizations. Steroids as far as I am concerned is cheating, and there is no possible explanation for an athlete to cheat. When you take steroids, there are some extreme consequences that go with it. Steroids cause side effects that are extremely noticeable and naked to the eye. “ Unlike almost all other drugs, all steroid based hormones have one unique characteristic- their dangers may not be manifest for months, years and even decades. Therefore, long after you gave them up you may develop side effects”( ESPN.com). Over time steroids can cause heart attacks or liver cancer, not to mention all the disgusting acne that often develops. In men steroids can cause reduced sperm count, impotence, development of breasts, shrinking of the testicles and difficulty or pain while urinating. Women who take steroids can get facial hair growth, depend voice, breast reduction and menstrual cycle changes. Very few studies of treatments for steroid abuse have been conducted. Current knowledge is based largely on the experiences of a small number of physicians who have worked with patients undergoing steroid withdrawal (Steroids). Some medications that have been used for treating steroid withdrawal restore the hormonal system after its disruption by steroid abuse. Other medications target specific withdrawal symptoms, like antidepressants to treat depression, and analgesics for head-aches and muscle pains (NIDA). So what can be done to prevent steroid abuse? I think it is very important for steroid awareness to start right at home, and treat it as if it was just like any other drug. When you are a preteen pretty much every kid gets ‘the talk’ about drugs and sex. So why not have a talk about steroids too, especially if you are an athlete that is growing up in a very athletic world. Steroids are extra male hormone
