If you were to walk down the street in an average Canadian city and ask the question, “What is your favorite sport?” most people are likely to answer with hockey. Hockey is a Canadian game that defines us as a nation and as a culture. We are the birthplace of the sport and our people have dominated the game since the beginning. Many of the greatest players to ever play the game have been Canadian. It is a facet of everyday life in most Canadian homes. Weather it is watching hockey or talking about hockey or even playing hockey, most Canadians are involved with some aspect of hockey. The morning paper and radio broadcasts provide all Canadian homes with information and statistics on the game played the night before. Television allows fans to watch games, sometimes with a better view of the action than if they had been there themselves. Drivers should be on the lookout for the many young people playing hockey in the street.
As the game evolved in Canada and around the world, one thing has been constant: our country has produced the top players, the top administrators, the top teams and has laid the groundwork for hockey operations and associations that have been modeled around the world. Canadian children are introduced to the game at a very early age and for many the love of the game stays with them through adult-hood. This early initiation is one of the reasons why Canada produces some of the best talent in the world year in and year out. If someone was to name off some of the best hockey players to ever play the game the results would probably be a little disturbing. Names like Gretzky, Richard, Orr, Howe, Roy and many others would come to mind. The common denominator within this list is all these people are Canadian. We love the game dearly and because our passion for the game is so strong our citizens have become some of the best players of all time.
