Cuba

Cuba is an island between the North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Cuban history dates back to the voyages of Christopher Columbus. This Spanish speaking country has a limited amount of religions that are practiced within its borders. From the rule of the Spanish to the beginning of the Communist reign of Fidel Castro, Cuba has been a country full of conflict and problems.

Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Cuba in 1492, on his first trip across the Atlantic Ocean. Columbus first named the land he found after the Spanish ruler’s daughter Juana. After many names, conflicts and different rulers it became known as Cuba, from its aboriginal name, Cubanascnan. Cuba was then colonized by Spain, which remained in power until 1898. The United States put troops in Cuba in 1906 and was in control until Fidel Castro led rebel forces to victory over the United States in 1959. Thus begins the rule of the tough communist government of Cuba. In the early 1960’s the United States placed a trade embargo on Cuba slowing down drastically all trade with the United States, one of the sources of there income to the country (www.emayzine.com).

Only approximately one quarter of Cuba is mountainous, the rest of the land is predominantly flat land with a few hills. The main mountain ranges are the Sierra de Trinidad in the central part of the island, the Sierra Maestra, in the Southeast, and Sierra de los Organos in the West. Most of the soil of Cuba is relatively fertile. One of the natural features of the island is the large number of limestone caverns. Most of the many rivers of Cuba are short and un-navigable. The main river is the Cauto, located in the Southeast. The coast of Cuba is very irregular and is indented by numerous gulfs and bays. The island also has a large number of harbors (www.cia.gov).
