In the story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge I believe that each thing felt, heard, or seen was a symbol for what truly happened.
It starts when in Paragraph 18 Peyton falls into the river. This is when he is being hung. Then in paragraph 19 “His neck ached horribly; his brain was on fire; His body was racked and wrenched with an insupportable anguish.” This refers to the first pains that he is having. “His heart which had been fluttering faintly, gave a great leap, trying to force itself out of his mouth.” (p. 19) He was scared and his heart was pounding because he didn’t know what was going to come next. “His lungs engulfed a great draught of air.” (p. 19) He was being strangled and couldn’t catch his breath. “A counter-swirl had caught Farquhar and turned him half round.” (p. 24) He was dangling from the b
ridge on the rope. “As he rose to the surface, gasping for breath, he saw that he had been a long time under water.” (p. 26) still he was trying to catch his breath but realizes he was hanging for a while. “Suddenly he felt himself whirled round and round-spinning like a top.” (p. 31) He still is just dangling. “He could no longer feel the roadway beneath his feet.” (p. 35) He realizes that the ground is gone. “He feels a stunning blow upon the back of the neck.” (p. 36) His neck finally breaks.
When a person is dying they see a lot of different things. One of the most common is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. “Saw above him a gleam of light.” (p. 18) Then it began to grow and brighten, and he knew he was rising toward the surface.” (p. 18) I believe that he is seeing the light at the end of the
