Age of Discovery: Portugal and Spain
Throughout history the curiosity of men have brought them to destinations unknown. This yearning for discovery by men has fueled the expansion of empires and monarchies over the centuries. Discovery and expansion can be seen from the Polynesians to the early voyages of the Vikings to the conquistadors of Spain. Expansion was prominent during one era in history especially. This era was the Age of Expansion. The Age of Expansion stretched from the late fourteenth century into the early sixteenth century. Though a host of countries impacted this era, two countries in particular came to lead the way, Spain and Portugal. Spain and Portugal were the prominent powers of the time and both of their countries’ governments made expansion a top priority. The encouragement to explore by these two governments led to many great discoveries in the name of Spain and Portugal. Although both of these countries were great powers, one would eventually surpass the other. Spain proved to be more powerful than Portugal during the Age of Expansion. Their superiority in administration, exploration and ability to compete with other countries made them the stronger country.
