Barry Bonds: A Mental Superstar

Barry Bonds is arguably the best hitter ever to play Major League Baseball. He is currently three homeruns behind his godfather Willie Mays, who hit the third most homeruns of all time with 660 (“Hammering”). Barry Bonds, one of the most talented players of his generation, was just following a legendary tradition. He grew up having his dad, Bobby Bonds, and his godfather, Willie Mays; both become talented Major League Baseball Players. Talent can be over emphasized in baseball, or in life. A question could be posed, “Why are some baseball players talented beyond belief, but don’t succeed?” The father of psychology Sigmund Freud, would answer, some baseball players may not have a desire or will to succeed, or lack unconscious motives. There are two parts of the unconscious mind: the id and superego. The id consists of repressed, or hidden, desires or urges. A superego makes a person have guilt and identify a difference between right and wrong. So, in other words, a superego replaces our parents. and if the child has no repressed urges within the unconscious mind, they have the tendency to not have a will or desire to do certain things.

Sigmund Freud was the first psychologist to step into new boundaries and

Sigmund Freud hypothetically would say ‘being dependent as a child has a tendency to lead to being independent as an adult.’ If the parents are not always around when a child needs them, they cry because they are dependent on their parents. This could lead to neglect, not saying it will. There is also a possibility that the parents can not afford the child with only one parent working, so the child gets sent off to day care, where they are completely dependent on the care takers. There are many situations that a child could and will fell neglect. There sometimes nothing wrong with the way a parent raises their child, but when the child wants, needs, or desires something, that child has become dependent on his parents. Later on in life when the child grows up and matures into an adult; the dependency that he wanted as a child was never there for him when he needed it the most, and he does not forget it completely, it is just placed in the unconscious mind. Now as an adult, he does not want that dependency anymore. In speculation, the adult wants to prove his parents wrong by becoming an independent adult. He might think to himself, that ‘I do not need your help; I can make it on my own!’ This is the very common factor in many, if not all children. It is not the parents’ fault they can not be at the child’s side at every begging moment in their child’s life, which is not humanely possible.

If a parent or ‘friend’ tells someone he will not succeed in life, which is a perfect motive to succeed. On the contrary, if the person is told that he is the best thing in the world, when a negative aspect occurs, he will not handle it well and will probably not succeed. Having a repressed urge or desire helps a person succeed in life, especial
