Mammoths and Mastadons
Both mammoths and mastodons lived during the Pleistocene era in Europe, North America, and Asia. During this time, “the earth was covered with a coat of ice” (www.uen.org/centennial/12AdaptationA.html). In order for these animals to survive such cold conditions, they developed a long, thick, shaggy coat of hair to keep them warm (www.uen.org/centennial/12AdaptationA.html). Scientists have determined that they “became extinct at the end of the Pleistocene about 10,000 years ago” (Giuliani). Three possible explanations for their extinction include: changes in climate, deadly viruses, or over-hunting by man.
