WWI

Ww1 was about the fight that involved the whole world. The fight had been raging for years because of militarism, the belief that a nation should have a large military force, nationalism, the belief in ones nation, alliances, the joining of nations, Imperialism, when one large country takes control over a weaker one. The spark that caused ww1 was the assaination of the archduke of Austria-hungry Francis Ferdinand by a Siberia.

Their were 2 opposing forces in the battle allied powers and the central powers. On the side of the central powers were the Ottoman Empire, Austria-hungry, and Germany. On the side of the allied powers were Japan, Britain, Serbia, Russia, Italy, France and 15 other smaller countries were also involved with the allied powers.

German U-boats were destroying British vessels. They also were destroying American vessels out in the sea.

Both sides wanted America to come to their side. Both sides posted propaganda to make America want to join on their side. Then they found out that a person in Germany sent a telegram over to Mexico to urge them to fight against Germany. President Woodrow Wilson wanted to go to war.

Some feared that a newly formed nation of America should not enter such wars.

On the Western front French and British troops together with thousands of men from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa occupied a network of deep trenches from September 1914. Facing them, across a few hundred yards of ground known as “No Man’s Land”, were trenches occupied by the Germans. Millions of men were killed on the Western front in battles such as Ypres, 2Verdun, Somme and on routine patrols. Warfare in the trenches was only expected to last until the Spring but by 1917 the war had reached a stalemate because of the ineffectiveness of this type of warfare. The idea of digging the trenches was to prevent the Germans from reaching Paris and no one had thought that it would’ve lasted so long.

Occasionally even the men in the trenches showed some kind of humanity, even compassion towards the enemy.

Several months of war passed before regular supplies of water to the trenches were organized. The delay was a result of the prevading notion that the trenches would only be temporary. Many of the men depended on impure water, which collected in shell holes or other cavities. This was a standard, but unofficial, method of water collection developed in the trenches and was used for many months.
