Competition in the political realm

People all over the world have their own personal ideologies that play a role in decisions that are made in their everyday lives. In a world of approximately 6 billion people, each with different values, beliefs and ideals, there needs to be some sort of political system in place to prevent the chaos that would ensue if governments were left to their own devices. There are those that would argue that some people are born leaders and that rule by one is the natural option. There are some that would argue that citizens should have a choice in who makes their political decisions, but those choices should be limited to two parties. Then there are those that argue that citizens have the right to more than two choices and should be free to choose the party that best fulfills their own ideologies, therefore having a multitude of parties available to make their choice. Competition between political parties in the form of a multi-party system ensures that there is effective and efficient representation of citizen's wishes and needs and governments should be formed in this manner.
The definition of a one-party system or single-party system is a party system in which there exists only one party and no political alternatives are legally tolerated. An example of a country with a one-party system is Nazi Germany under the rule of Adolph Hitler. To think of a one-party system as having positive aspects is sometimes a far reach for someone living in a democracy where there is meaningful participation by citizens in the decision making process. But pros do exist. Firstly there is the matter of cost effective elections. When there is only one party to choose from, there is less cost associated with the electoral process, for example, campaigning, literature and costs associated with trying to prove that you are the best candidate for the position. Secondly, there is the belief that a one-party political system unites its citizens, giving people a sense of ultra- nationalism.
